              KTM's over-the-counter 250bhp MotoGP bike

KTM’s upcoming new V4 MotoGP racer will be available for anyone to buy and race—but what does this mean for the future of the RC8 superbike

Earlier this year, KTM’s CEO Stefan Pierer announced that KTM would be re-entering the MotoGP championship in 2017 with a brand new RC16 MotoGP bike. However despite this admission, Pierer has remained tight-lipped and refused to reveal any more specific details about the bike.

But now the silence has been broken, and SR got the inside scoop on just what KTM’s plans with the RC16 are, and how the company is intending to transform MotoGP grids as well as shape KTM’s future motorcycle range.

“At the moment two things are existing regarding the MotoGP project – the decision to go into MotoGP and the decision to create the successor to the RC8,” explains Thomas Kuttruf, KTM’s Worldwide PR Manager. “This is the real intention, it is not about ‘we must compete in MotoGP’ it is the fact we are on the way to becoming the world’s leading sports cycle manufacturer.”

Although KTM are unwilling to admit as such, the RC8 – despite being a good road bike – has failed to live up to expectations in terms of race success, only securing German superbike wins and not appearing on the WSBK scene. With this in mind, the only part of KTM’s sports portfolio that is missing is a flagship model in the superbike class - and that is what the RC16 is destined to become. However, chances are it won’t be a road bike as Stefan Pierer has stated that he doesn’t believe 100% that fully faired big bikes have a long-term future on public roads, as some sections of the EU Commission are requesting a ban on such motorcycles.

While this may not happen at all, it's certainly a consideration in KTM’s decision to build a MotoGP bike, as is the fact they can’t enter Moto2 since the class currently uses Honda engines.

So, with these thoughts in mind, the go-ahead was given to build the RC16, a choice that the new MotoGP rule changes, which KTM were involved in helping formulate, certainly assisted.

“The 2016 season, when the new rules apply, will be a kind of re-start for everyone,” explains Kuttruf. “The playing field will be leveled and KTM can challenge Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, Suzuki and Aprilia on an equal footing. Mr. Pierer saw this was a good opportunity and decided that the replacement for the RC8 should be built to the highest racing regulations possible – MotoGP. A MotoGP-spec bike that anyone can own for 2017.”

KTM have already confirmed it is developing a V4 engine, however in the recent months the R&D department has taken this project a stage further. According to sources within the factory, the target is for over 250bhp from a totally new V4 that shares no components with the old MotoGP project. It will not have pneumatic valves as KTM feel that this is too complicated and lowers durability, but it will have a very advanced electronics package inline with the MotoGP rules.

“The new bike will be competitive in MotoGP in the same way our Moto3 bike has been built,” said Kuttruf. “KTM does not run a full factory Moto3 team, the bikes are identical in specification to anyone who pays €43,000 Euros, there is no favoritism. Essentially, KTM pays for the development of a competitive bike and then we sell it to customers. With the MotoGP bike we will run a similar system, although clearly it will cost significantly more.”

Although unwilling to name an exact figure, Sport Rider believes that KTM are targeting on supplying a bike to riders for less than €250,000 Euros, which is significantly less than the €1.2 million Euros a Honda RCV1000R production MotoGP bike currently costs.

What will they get for their money? As well as a V4 with over 250bhp, the RC16 will have a tubular steel trellis chassis with WP suspension and extensive use of carbon fiber as KTM have their own carbon manufacturing facility.

At the moment KTM are currently working on developing a prototype engine by summer 2015 and a year later installing it into a chassis. After the disappointment of KTM’s last MotoGP effort, which was run in cooperation with the Kenny Roberts team and ended in an acrimonious mid-season split in 2005, this time all of the development will be done in house, another stipulation Pierer has insisted upon.
“KTM does not enter a competitive class just to make up the numbers, so of course we will be looking to show full competitiveness in MotoGP. However, the MotoGP bike will also be a KTM model, and therefore help the development of road bikes,” said Kuttruf. “This year there are over 150 RC250R Moto3 bikes running in various championships all around the world and with the supply of parts etc. it is paying off as a business, which justifies the investment. Hopefully a similar thing will happen with the MotoGP bike.”

PBM bid fond farewell to MotoGP

Penrith-based racing team Paul Bird Motorsport will race their last Grand prix in this Sunday’s end-of-series MotoGP race at Valencia. Following three years of moderate success in the premier class of motorcycle racing the team, which is comprised of former British Supersport Champion Michael Laverty and Australian Broc Parkes, will be retiring in order to focus their efforts on BSB.
Despite the 2014 season having seen the teams’ best ever results with point finishes for both riders at Indianapolis and Sepang, team owner Paul Bird has decided to call an end to their MotoGP project, which saw the team design, build and race their own Grand prix bike, a move originally dismissed as ‘mad’ by fellow teams.
