Technical Editor Matt Wood’s took Kenworth’s T909 on a 3,500km trip and walked away impressed.
Kenworth’s T909 is a popular choice for road train haulers as well as quite few single trailer operators. For some it’s about the big–banger looks, for others it’s about the long wheel base and limo like ride. These days the big bonneted Kenworth is dependent solely on Cummins power.

                            ENGINE

However, the Cummins ISX exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) engine hasn’t lived up to the expectations of many and some previously staunchly Kenworth fleets have even flirted with European brands in the interim.
The 15-litre ISXe5 launched in late 2012 uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR) instead of EGR to satisfy ADR80/03 (Euro 5).
The ISXe5 also does away with the variable geometry turbo (VGT) in favour of a waste gated turbo and uses a single overhead camshaft rather than the twin camshaft set up of the EGR engine.
Industry response to the engine has on the most part been positive with dyed in the wool Cummins operators reporting gains in both performance and in fuel economy.
Reliability is also reported to have improved with the simplified induction system and the ultra-high pressure XPI common rail fuel injection system. Horsepower ratings for the ISXe5 range from 450-600hp (335-447kW).

                            PERFORMANCE

We’ve managed to get our hands on the ISXe5 a couple of times in the past, including a sneaky pre-release stint in one of the test trucks. And on both occasions we have been impressed with the performance and driveability of the SCR Cummins.
However, we’d only ever driven the engine at B-double weights and on east-coast freight routes. How does the new Cummins go at over 100 tonnes?
To find out we set off for Darwin behind the wheel of a Hillmans Transport T909 from Toowoomba, west of Brisbane. Initially only towing two trailers, we picked up our third trailer at Mitchell, in Queensland’s Maranoa region, before heading off through western Queensland and eventually the Northern Territory.
At a gross weight of 108 tonnes the Cummins performed admirably. The T909 is also a solid beast to steer, which made keeping three trailers lined up and on the road quite easy. Heading to Darwin at the end of the wet season saw us deal with side winds as well as torrential rain, all of which the big Kenworth took in its stride.

                            VERDICT

Hillmans Transport is reporting big gains in fuel economy as well as impressively moderate AdBlue use of just 2.17 per cent of fuel burn. The company has another 12 ISXe5-powered T909s on the way.
I spent three days and 3,500km with the T909 and I came away impressed with the performance of the 550hp ISXe5 as well as the sure-footed nature of the T909 in a road train role.
