              1978 TOYOTA FJ40 LAND CRUISER

              Reading time: about 2 minutes.

The Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser and the Land Rover did battle for sales dominance across Africa, Australia, South America and Asia throughout the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s and beyond. No clear winner ever emerged and the modern day supporters of each marque have a hard earned and begrudging respect for one another.
The first Toyota 4×4 was essentially a facsimile of a WWII Jeep that had been captured by the Japanese in the Philippines as they descended through South East Asia. The resulting prototype was called the Model AK, it formed the foundation of Toyota’s beginnings as a 4×4 manufacturer and it’s visual similarities with the Jeep would persist for decades – despite Toyota’s attempts to disguise it.
The FJ40 is almost certainly the most iconic of the Toyota Land Cruiser models, its reputation was established with the FJ series thanks to the insistence by the Japanese engineers that the 4×4 be tested in the Australian outback. They considered the outback to be one of the toughest testing environments in the world, and they’ve been rewarded with a lot of loyalty from the Australians as a result – Toyota 4x4s are still the best selling off road vehicles in the country.
The FJ40 you see here is likely to be one of the finest restored examples anywhere in the world, and it likely has a rather interesting history due to the fact that it was owned by the same family in Colombia for its entire life. It’s just been through a nut-and-bolt restoration by the team at The FJ Company with a strong focus on originality – it was rebuilt with NOS Toyota parts where possible, and original parts were restored throughout.
The original, matching-numbers 4.2-liter 6-cylinder engine and 4-speed transmission have been rebuilt, the four-wheel drive system was rebuilt and Old Man Emu suspension parts were fitted throughout. The original art-conditioning unit was also restored to factory spec and the team at The FJ Company even went so far as to galvanise the nuts and bolts during the rebuild process.
If you’ve always wanted an FJ40 but wished you could buy one that was better than new, you might want to make your way along to the RM Sotheby’s Arizona Auction on the 28th of January – it’s estimated to be worth somewhere in the region of $80,000 to $100,000 USD – so be sure to bring your chequebook.

1954 Chevy Truck – Country Boy City Slicker

Written by Grant Peterson on June 1, 2009

Fred Perez's '54 Chevy "Ex Farm Implement"

These days, some people may find it hard to believe that a pickup like Fred Perez’s-a beautifully restored piece of true Americana-used to be nothing more than an old workhorse, a farm truck if you will. That’s something that can be interpreted in different ways, but mainly it might suggest that they cannot believe something as nice as this would have ever set tire tread on a dirty old farm, let alone be forced to hard labor on one. On the other hand, there are folk who have a difficult time accepting the fact that anyone would even consider taking the time to turn a beat-up farm implement into a thing of such rolling beauty. But as you and I already know, those ain’t no car folk, otherwise, about the only things they’d be wondering is where Fred found all those rare accessories he’s proudly displaying on his ’54 Chevy!
Being a man of Chevrolet heritage, Fred considers the accessory collecting one of the most vital aspects of vintage automobilia. His first truck project was going to wear a bevy of ’em, which is in stark contrast to its Spartan attire it had become quite accustomed to after spending over 40 years on a Colorado farm. But before dressing the ol’ country boy in its new city slicker duds, he and two other generations of Perez-his father Chon and son Freddy-got the truck in fit shape.

With the exception of a nice alteration of stance and sound (lowering and split exhaust), the ’54 is pretty much all stock from the ground up-though you probably wouldn’t have seen too many on the showroom floor equipped with a set of 15-inch accessory artillery wheels. But that’s where personal style and taste enters the picture, drawing a line between restoration and interpretation…the latter of which ultimately reflects the individuality of the owner (Deluxe Panel stainless trim package and two-tone paint for example).
Along with the help of his family, the truck wouldn’t have come together as such without the involvement of others, like 89-year-old Leonard Lehman (engine); Dan and Brent at Crown Metal Products (sheetmetal work); Marty Varela at Ken’s Classic Muffler; Emilio Rubio (paint); and Darrell’s Upholstery. But as for all the trinkets, gadgets, and fancy add-ons, the credit goes solely to Fred for spending countless hours-and probably more money-tracking down, restoring, and incorporating them all on this Chevy.
