It's easy to be sceptical when taking a stroll around this 1999 Mitsubishi MR Lancer. Sure, it looks trick with a custom body kit, lowered suspension and big boots but you have to wonder if there's any real mumbo to go with that big chrome tailpipe. Then you spot the absolutely, positively HUGE brakes; hmmmm, maybe there's a reason for those...

    There is!

Jamie Carl has owned this 1999 Mitsi Lancer MR coupe since new. Selling brand spankers for just $24,490, the bargain Lancer coupe came with the most basic steel wheels - which is no great loss when you plan fitting your own selection of aftermarket wheels from Day One. Jamie had the car for just a month before he slapped on a set of 16-inch chrome 5-spokes. To heighten the impact of the larger wheels, the suspension was also dropped down around 2-inches thanks to Pedders springs working with Monroe GT as dampers. Already, things were starting to look good - it's pretty easy to make a Lancer coupe look drool worthy.

With a DOHC, 16-valve, 1.8-litre four capable of 86kW of power, the pretty Mitsu coupe is no speed machine in standard form - a 5-speed MR takes nearly 10-seconds to crack 100 km/h. So where should you begin in the search for a bit more grunt? Jamie opted for a high-flow exhaust system - a cat-back 2-inch mandrel Hi-Tek job with a bullet muffler. "The car felt a bit more powerful with the exhaust" says Jamie but, still, the lust for even more power went unsatisfied for a few more months.

Before chasing the proverbial power bone, Jamie first honed the car's already substantial visual attraction using a SSV front 'bar, an Evo-style fluted bonnet and a towering rear wing atop the boot lid. And the side skirts you can see? These are standard MR issue.

Now we arrive back at the issue of more power.

After a bit of research, Jamie was fairly keen on a conversion to quad throttle induction. Jamie took the idea to Brett from MRT (Middleton Rally Team) and, well, Brett pretty much shot it down! Sure, the quad throttle induction would reduce intake restriction, but without head work, a cam and more it wouldn't really provide an eye-widening driving experience. For the biggest bang for buck, it was decided to take a turbocharger approach - this is a guaranteed way to realise a power increase of more than 30 percent. Forget farting about with multi throttles!

Although focusing mainly on Daihatsus, Hondas and Subarus, MRT tackled Jamie's Lancer with more than a fair idea of what they were doing. First - since the engine internals were to remain standard - it was obvious the turbo system had to be configured to deliver fairly mild boost - up to 0.5 Bar (about 8 psi) it was decided.

Given the limited scope for boost there wasn't much point bolting on a massive turbocharger - all that'd do is create massive lag. Instead, a fairly conservative size Garrett GT25 (with a roller bearing centre) was given the nod. MRT fabricated a neat tubular exhaust manifold designed simply to fit in the space available in the nose. Once the turbo was mounted on the side of the head, the custom water and oil feed and return lines were integrated into the factory cooling and lubrication system.

The compressor side of the turbo sucks air through a RamPod filter, while heated charge-air goes for a ride though custom 2 ¾-inch mandrel plumbing and a specially made MRT air-to-air intercooler. Tucked behind the custom front bar, it looks as close to the Evo rally car as you could imagine. A GFB (Go Fast Bits) blow-off valve makes the sounds you don't expect from a Lancer coupe.

To cope with the introduction of forced induction, the standard engine management was hauled out and a programmable Link Plus system was wired in. A fun job that was! The new computer teams with the standard ignition hardware and, in the first instance, the stock fuel system.

With everything up and running, it became apparent that the existing 2-inch exhaust wouldn't allow the turbine to breathe to its fullest potential. Hung under the floor is now a 2 ½-inch pipe with a 3-inch rear muffler. The new system improves flow considerably and, given the relatively large rear 'box, it's relatively quiet.

With the Mitsubishi strapped down on MRT's Dyno Dynamics chassis dyno (one of the first times a Mitsubishi has 'polluted' the workshop!) the car initially rolled out 126kW at the front tyres. It was discovered, however, 4 psi of boost was all that the stock fuel system would allow before leaning out. With a Malpassi adjustable fuel pressure reg now upping rail pressure, however, boost has been screwed up to 8 psi and the guys have seen 152kW at the wheels. "That was in its everyday set-up" says Jamie, "and the tank was filled with straight Optimax".

Jamie had never bargained on this much grunt!

Channelling this significant output through the front wheels is no small task. As Jamie says, "if you can handle it in first gear you're okay but, yeah, it does get a fair bit of wheelspin through first". In the search for traction, Jamie again revised the wheel and tyre package - a giant set of 17 x 7 HR Racing wearing 205/40 rubbers are in current service.

The downside of these massive rims is the already dinky standard brakes now look minuscule. Not only that, "after nearly killing myself" Jamie's idea to up-spec the brakes became somewhat urgent. So what now replaces the piddling standard front discs and drum rears? Well, how do drilled and slotted VX Commodore 330mm front discs and calipers, and 300mm rears grab you? The certainly grab the 950-odd kilogram Lancer!

While a slight weight penalty can be tied to the turbo system, Jamie decided he had more than enough torque to cope with a few extra kilograms. The interior has been fully trimmed in red leather, an AutoMeter boost gauge is fitted and there's a quality feeling Momo steering wheel and gearknob for Jamie to hang on to. The crappy Mitsi audio system has also been retired from operation. There's now a MiniDisc/CD stacker head unit, a large amplifier, 6-inch front splits, 6-inch 3-way rears and dual 10-inch subs in the boot - all of the sound gear is made by Sony. Oh, and peer inside the glovebox and you'll see a power supply and Link ECU data input cable to plug into a laptop. Tricky!

As you might guess given its cosmetics, 152kW ATW output and monster brakes, Jamie's done pretty well all he plans to do his Lancer. But he's not exactly going to stand still... Jamie's a confessed Mini lover and he's presently ripping the guts out of a '65 Mini DeLuxe. The plan is a restoration job, but - nah - we reckon it'll morph into something a bit more. Let's see, what size turbo can you fit in the engine compartment and what size brakes can you fit behind those cute little rims?
